Early days, the show featured a recurring character named Irwin Mainway, played with sleazy zeal by Dan Aykroyd. Always wearing sunglasses and a pencil moustache, the president of Mainway Toys would be grilled on Consumer Probe for his never-ending line of dangerous children's toys: "Johnny Switchblade: Adventure Punk" (a Ken doll with actual knives in spring-loaded arms), "Bag o' Glass" (simply a bag of jagged glass shards; "Bag o' Nails," "Bag o' Vipers," "Bag o' Sulphuric Acid" also available), "Teddy Chainsaw Bear" (plush bear with chainsaw protruding from stomach), "Johnny Human Torch" (oily rags and a lighter), etc.

While the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission doesn't have anything quite as bizarre in their toy recall records, a few have come close. Here are few all-too-true examples, past and present:

Water Wiggle (1978): Wham-O discontinued production of the Water Wiggle, "designed to be attached to a garden hose for water fun," after an incident with a 4-year-old. "The youngster was playing with some other children in his back yard with a dismantled Water Wiggle, one from which the bell-shaped head had been removed or had come off. The exposed aluminum nozzle became lodged in his mouth."
